Five Minutes in the Life of a Napa Cabbage

What a beautiful day! A little colder than it should be, but at least the sun’s out. I’ve been living under these strange white things the humans call frost cloth inside of a hoop house with 700 of my closest friends for the past month.

It’s a little cramped in here under the cloth, but it sure beats my old digs. I had to spend a whole month in a one-inch cell, can you believe it!?

When the sun is shining, it heats up really quick under these hoops. Sometimes the sides of the entire 90 foot hoophouse are rolled up and we get a nice breeze. Does wonders for my leaves.

The sun’s out right now. The sides are up, and my leaves are flowing gently. I’m feeling good and looking pretty fly.

Wait…

What is this white stuff dropping from the sky? It’s so pretty, I’ve never seen anything like this before. Now it’s blowing my way and I AM SO COLD I MUST BE DYING.

This reminds me of when Uncle Herb stayed outside too late in October and all the water in his leaves froze. When it got warm again Uncle Herb turned into mush. This can’t be happening to me, this can’t be happening to me, this can’t be happening to me, this can’t be happening to me...

Was I … dreaming?

It’s sunny and warm in here again….

The humans are still running around like crazy people, rolling the sides up and back down, messing with the frost cloths. I don’t know why they can’t leave well enough alone, it’s going to get hot again.

Uncle Herb always told us, “ If you don’t like the weather in April, just wait fifteen minutes.”
